The 36th SAIC Century Club Matches resembled a great boxing match. In the end the Amateurs rallied with a 7 ½ to 4 ½ margin in the Sunday Individual Matches to end a three year losing streak and tie the overall 36-year series at
The Amateurs led 3 ½ to 2 ½ during the Pinehurst Matches on the first day of play at San Diego Country Club. Then the Professionals rallied for a 4 ½ to 1 ½ advantage after the Better Ball of Partners Matches and a 7-5 lead going into the deciding 12 individual matches.
The amateurs turned it on during Sunday's individual matches, earning 7 ½ points with David Schnider (3&2), Jeff Hunter (2&1), Pete Roberts (4&3), Robert Hakes (3 & 2), Mark Etue (6 &4), John Hoffman (2 & 1), Jim Robyn winning
and Pat Duncan halving his match to win the John Hine Cup. Professionals who won their individual matches included:
Barry Mahlberg (1 up), Justin Hicks (5&4), Steve Vaughn (3 & 2), Gary Sowinski (l up) and Mike Nokes halved
against Duncan.
The Century Club Matches Amateur team is selected by accumulating points throughout the year by playing in the San Diego County Tournament Committee and SCGA events, and the professional team in San Diego Chapter of the PGA of America tournaments.
