Tim Hogarth Wins Buick Invitational Amateur Qualifier
Tim Hogarth, of Northridge, captured the Buick Invitational Amateur Qualifying tournament
with a 5-under-par score of 67 on the South Course, earning the one sponsor exemption,
out of a starting field of 100 players, with a 0 or better handicap. The 67 posted by Hogarth
is the lowest round in Buick Invitational Qualifying tournament history.
Hogarth, 40, tied for low round with 16-year old, Bi O Kim of Irvine. He earned his spot on the first playoff hole after making a par, and Kim made bogey on the par-4 first hole. “I’m really excited about this win today. Torrey Pines is such a great golf course and I can’t wait to play in the Buick Invitational,”said Hogarth, who also played in the 1998 Masters after winning the 1997 U.S. Amateur Public Links event. In addition, Hogarth, who is a health food broker, is the only amateur player to have captured the California State Amateur, Southern California Amateur and Southern California Mid-Amateur titles.
This is the 22nd year the Century Club of San Diego has sponsored this event that will enable one amateur player to compete against 155 other professional players at Torrey Pines for the Buick Invitational title from January 22-28, 2007.
The Buick Invitational Amateur Qualifier is filled with top local and regional amateur players with many ties to college programs, which makes his effort so remarkable. Only three players have made the professional cut in the previous 21 years which included Pat Duncan in 50th place in 1989, Steve Haase 75th place in 1989 and Charley Hoffman in 76th place in 1996.
