Buick Victory Earns Seventh Straight PGA Tour Win
Tiger Woods is Five Time Buick Invitational Champion
The 2007 Buick Invitational was an all too familiar scene on the 18th
green as Tiger Woods took home his fifth tournament win. With this
victory, Woods solidified his seventh straight win on the PGA TOUR, the
second-longest streak in history.
Woods caught up to the pack with an eagle, buried the hopes of Charles Howell III with a birdie and closed with a 6-under-par 66 to extend his PGA TOUR streak to seven.
Woods won six in a row in 2000, a streak that Phil Mickelson stopped at Torrey Pines. But against a cast of challengers short on experience and victories, the world's No. 1 player met little resistance in winning the Buick Invitational for the third straight year.
Woods doesn't consider this a true winning streak because he lost once in Europe and twice in Asia since September 2006. But it still counts in the PGA TOUR record books as a streak to be challenged.
"To somehow sneak out with the win is a cool feeling," Woods said.
He got some help from Andrew Buckle and Jeff Quinney, both of whom had at least a share of the lead on the back nine. In an eventful span of less than 10 minutes, Buckle and Quinney both double-bogeyed, and Woods birdied the 13th hole to take the lead for good.
Howell provided the final challenge with three birdies in a four-hole stretch,
but Woods answered with an approach to 2 feet on the 17th hole for birdie
that allowed him to play it safe on the par-5 closing hole.
Howell had a 50-foot eagle putt on the 18th that could have forced a playoff, but he played it too high over the ridge. He wound up three-putting for par to close with 4-under-par 68 on the final round, and had to settle for second place yet again
"I gave him a run," Howell said. "Anytime you try to win a tournament against that guy, it's tough. I played well down the stretch. He just never flinched."
Brandt Snedeker, who had stayed atop the leader board since his opening round 61 on the easier North Course, still had lots to learn from playing in the last group. The 26-year-old rookie from Tennessee tied for the 54-hole lead with Buckle, closed with a 74 on the final round and finished third overall.
Woods finished with his second-best Sunday round ever on the South at 15-under 273. This victory marked a 55th PGA TOUR career win for Woods, and the fifth time he has started a new season with a trophy in hand.
